First Session of Dream & Achieve (28 Arpil 2009)

The “Dream and Achieve” programme is a community outreach initiative of Mensa Singapore. The programme seeks to engage, inspire and motivate the graduating class of NorthLight School (NLS), encouraging them to have the confidence to have dreams about their future as well as the resoluteness to see them through. The programme will be a four-part lecture series, which focuses on inspiring the students and motivating them to pursue their aspirations.

The first session was conducted on 28 April 2009, which consist of the first two lectures. The first lecture was by Ms Vivian Claire Liu, Founding Director of PhilanthropyWorks on the topic "Finding your calling". This lecture helps the students to be more aware of what they want to do in the future. Henry Kissinger once said "If you do not know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere." Having a clear vision of the future gives the students a sense of direction and a goal to aim towards.

The second lecture was by Mr Samuel Chia, Managing Director of NYDC Café and Restaurant on the topic "Entrepreneurship". Mr Chia shared his life experience with the students, like the importance of education, how he overcome failure and setbacks by believing in himself. He also stressed importance of continual self improvement, as technical skills alone are not sufficient to make one successful - soft skills are equally important.

Overall it is a very inspiring and motivating session for the students and both lectures complimented each other. One is about knowing where to go and the other is about how to get there. And the next session of this Dream & Achieve program will touch more on soft skills.

Updates on Community Outreach Programmes 2009

Just an update on the status of our community outreach programmes in Mensa Singapore:

We are currently working on two projects. One of them is the ongoing Mensa Y Outings, the other is a programme with North Light School, details of which are still currently being worked out. We are recruiting members to join the two "Special Project Group" to plan and coordinate the programmes. If you are keen to join us, you may contact the project managers directly.

We are still working with the Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA) in partnership with YMCA of Singapore. The next one is this Saturday (21 Feb 2009); we will be having a karaoke session at Cineleisure. Visit http://smu.mensa.org.sg/index.php?option=com_attend_events&task=view&id=15&Itemid=34 to sign up.

B. North Light School (NLS) Programme
Project Manager: Victor (victorpk17 yahoo com sg)

We are planning to launch a new community outreach programme with NLS in the middle of this year. After some initial discussions, we are looking at doing a Soapbox-like event for NLS students where we invite speakers to give talks on interesting topics covering various aspects of intelligence. The objective is to allow students to understand the multi-faceted nature of intelligence beyond academic achievements, and at the same time discover their personal gifts and talents.

We appreciate your support for our community outreach programmes thus far and hope that you will continue to find meaningful opportunities to make a difference in our community in Mensa Singapore.
